About CNG

The Clinical Neuroscience Group (CNG) is hosted by the Department of Neurology, Akershus University Hospital (Ahus) in collaboration with the University of Oslo (UiO). Our expressed goal is to focus our research on common diseases of the nervous system, with large impacts on individual health and societal costs. Our aim is to improve the standard of care with knowledge from the edge of research.

To achieve this, the group has focused on four main fields of interest, including a) Cognitive impairment and dementia, led by Professor Tormod Fladby; b) Cerebrovascular Diseases (CVD), led by Professor Ole Morten Rønning c) multiple sclerosis (MS) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), led by Professor Trygve Holmøy; and d) Headache disorders, led by senior researcher Kjersti Grøtta Vetvik. As the department serve a population approximately 600 000 patients (1 000 000 if we include thrombectomy services in stroke-care), we are fully equipped to investigate all fields extensively.

About Clinical Neuroscience Group (CNG)

Patient-oriented research is highly prioritized for CNG and is facilitated by the department and its large catchment area that ensures recruitment of patients into research projects in all fields of interest. We actively use our wide population to attract and collaborate with industry and academic partners, ensuring recruitment into clinical studies and translational work. The department actively facilitates and encourages junior doctors (LIS) to join research project and support them throughout PhD-programs. Our four fields of interest have gradually evolved over the decade, generating more senior consultants and senior researchers that can contribute to such studies, with or without PhDs.

As of the end of 2022, our group included three Professor II and one Associate Professor from the University of Oslo, all of which also practice as senior consultants within the Department of Neurology at Ahus. In addition, the department employed six senior researchers and post. docs., as well as 11 PhD students, most which are funded on a project-to-project basis. Numerous department doctors, nurses, biotechnicians and bioinformaticians also contribute to our various project as an integrated part of the Department of Neurology service.

Over the years, the group has built a portfolio of projects including a wide variety of clinical studies and trials in all fields of interest, epidemiological- and translational studies with project-based funding, national and international collaborations, researcher-initiated studies and industry-funded Phase II and III clinical trials. We have established a partnership with biotech company PreDiagnostics, who aim to commercialize the group’s intellectual properties within the field Cognitive Impairment. We collaborate with the Norwegian Labour and Welfare administration (NAV) in multidisciplinary treatment of headache to improve work participation.

The group has continuously contributed to the education of PhDs from MDs with research affinity, many of which now employed as senior consultants in our own department. Others have moved on to administrative positions within and outside our organization.
